Drive works fine but Seagate Manager Software is Useless. December 13, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this drive on sale and it is a good value. But I only rated it 2 stars because the supplied software is totally useless. You will most likely have to find your own method for copying/backing up software from your main computer to this external drive. When I went to the Seagate Manager sofware to setup what to backup, the main Windows directory is not even listed as an option to back it up! So I selected most of the directories and hit the Backup Now button. After a few seconds it said the Backup was Completed and it had not even copied a single file! I tried a few variations and zero luck, I'm going to have to either find some freeware, shareware or buy some backup software. There does not appear to be any information on the Seagate website and to send a tech support email you have to Register and Open a Case! I am seriously considering returning this drive.
Worked for the first day December 2, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this primarily for transferring files to a new home computer. It worked for about a day and a half. Then windows didn't see it anymore, the lights on the front of the drive stopped working. After unplugging the power, USB and rebooting the computer it still would not work. Shipped it back to the manufacture for an new or refurbished drive. I think I'll stick with the harddrive enclosure kits.
Good, But Worried November 5, 2008 11 out of 14 found this review helpful
I bought this drive a few days ago. Plug it in and install the software that came with it. It worked perfectly the first time. Now when i start my computer, it won't get past the boot stage. I need to unplug the hdd and reboot. Also windows won't recognize the drive at all times. I have to unplug the drive and plug it back in. Hopefully these minor annoyances don't take a wrong turn. I have put over 100 gigs of data on the drive, but i'm afraid to delete the originals off my other drive to make space :(
Excellent start... October 25, 2008 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I bought this disk recently and I use it connected to different computers at different times. It is not as mobile as the Freeagent-Go series, but it is faster and more versatile than Freeagent-Go.
My usage of this disk is probably not the most typical, but I emphasize that I stressed it far more than the average user might. To start with, I did not install the auto-backup software that comes with it. I don't intend to use this disk for back-ups. Despite that, I had no problems using it with the Windows-XP Service Pack-2. It was immediately recognized and mounted by the OS. Then I partitioned it into four, using Partition-Magic 8.0. Out of one single 500GB NTFS partition, I created a smaller NTFS partition, two VFAT partitions, and one Linux Ext3 partition. Again, moving and resizing and partitioning went on as smoothly as it would for an internal hard disk. Upon the completion of partitioning, the OS recognized the new partitions and immediately mounted them (except the Linux partition, but that's a deficiency with the Windows-XP, not with the disk.) Moving, and copying directories afterwards was very smooth and fast.
Then came the Linux test. I connected the disk to one of my Linux machines. Again it was immediately recognized and mounted (through the USB port) by the RedHat OS. This time the roles were reversed. RedHat mounted three partitions automatically except the NTFS partition, again an issue not related to the disk. I checked (using fdisk) that the computer also sees the NTFS partition, but the OS will not mount it, even after I put it in the fstab file manually. I guess every OS maker has to snub somebody to feel good about themselves.
So far, I am extremely pleased with my new disk. There is only one question remains: will it last and serve me well for years? Obviously I don't know that yet, but I don't want to wait three years to write a review.
