5 out of 5 stars Rugged and well built   September 30, 2008
I bought this bag originally because I needed a place for my 70-200 2.8VR to sit protected from the elements. I thought it might be a little too big for my needs at first but it holds three of my lenses two flash units and a camera body along with all the little things to make it work. If you have to carry your gear for a long period of time you will find this bag as comfortable as they get. There is a bigger model that holds a laptop, if that's a feature you need, go for it, if not, this is the bag for you.

5 out of 5 stars Sturdy!   April 18, 2008
I have this product, and so far so good. I used it with my Cannon 400D with several lenses and accessories. Good support for the tripod too.

Well worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Quality and Comfort   April 17, 2008

This is a very comfortable bag. This is my third camera bag as I also own the Canon 200EG and the Tamrac Expedition 5. The Kata is without a doubt the most comfortable and well built of the three. The padding and construction is so well built and of such high quality that I am no longer paranoid of dropping my bag even if it contained a 70-200 f/2.8 VR lens within. The Zippers are XL and straps are thick, yet this bag as being as well built as it is, remains fairly light.
Forget buying the cheap bags and get it right the first time. The only down side about this bag I can think of is I wish they would add an extra slotted pad instead of making consumers buy it, otherwise this bag is FIVE STARS.

5 out of 5 stars Kata R-102 GDC Rucksack for DSLR Cameras and Camcorders   February 17, 2008

I wanted a pack that was able to carry my Canon Rebel XTi with a Canon Image Stabilizer 70-300mm telephoto lens attached plus have room for a Canon EFS 18-55mm standard lens, a Sigma 10-20mm wide angle lens, a 580 Ex II Flash, 7 filters, battery charger, 3 extra batteries, several compact flash cards, and a lens cleaning kit. The 580 Ex II Flash was a tight fit, but every thing else went in just fine. I very pleased with my purchase and highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Very nice bag, just not the best fit for my wants   January 17, 2008

I ordered the Kata R102 and Lowepro Vertex 200 AW at the same time because I didn't know which I wanted. After trying them both for a week, I kept the Lowepro. I'm NOT saying this bag is inferior, it just fits a different need. I could definitely see myself buying the Kata down the road.

I needed a way to transport all my gear for an 8-month trip from the United States to Australia. There just wasn't enough room for "everything" in the Kata. That being said, the Vertex 200 is a much larger bag and is designed to carry more.

I loved loved loved the protective quality of the Kata R102 though. The outer shell is very shock absorbent and I'm confident it could take a kick or punch without damaging anything inside, let alone a shoulder-level fall to the ground. The zippers are very stiff but will loosen considerably after moderate use.

The bag is very comfortable and adjustments are easy to make with the shoulder harness. I can't say the same for the tripod holder. After seeing how easy the Lowepro system was and trying for 5 minutes with the Kata, I just gave up...the contest was over.

My main gripe however was the lack of individual storage compartments. There are mesh bags to toss small gear into, but I like things to be segmented and zippered securely. This is where the Lowepro really outshone the Kata. I may just be OCD for neatness and organization though.

In conclusion, if you just need to carry an SLR + 2-3 spare lenses inside an armor-like vault then the Kata R102 is for you. It's honestly the surest feeling luggage piece I've ever held. For my needs though, the compartmentalized storage and extra space the Lowepro offered was premier.
