Battery EXPLODED in charger. June 22, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
IMAGES of the exploded battery pieces were sent to Amazon to be seen with other product images. You can see these images by clicking the links below.
I purchased these two batteries for a Panasonic camcorder from Batteryheads TechFuel Premium Battery for Panasonic CGR-DU06 Camcorder along with the charger they sell for use with these batteries TechFuel Premium Travel Battery Charger for Panasonic CGR-DU06 Camcorder.
One of the batteries charged OK. The other exploded in the charger. Both events happened within a couple days of receiving the products.
I had heard of batteries exploding but found it very difficult to believe until it happened to me. I believed that batteries could overheat, even cause a fire, but I was not prepared for what happened with the products I got from Batteryheads.
I was astonished by the force of the explosion. The main mass of the battery seems to be enclosed in sheet metal and weighs about 1.5 oz. (about the same weight as a golf ball). It blew out of the charger with such force that when it struck a large windup alarm clock weighing almost a 1/2 lb. it threw it about 6" inches knocking it off the shelf of the small table where the charger was sitting. The piece of battery continued and landed about 3 ft. away on a bookshelf about 18 in. above the charger.
I would probably not take the time to write this negative review except for the fact that I sent an email to Batteryheads a month ago telling them what happened and asking how they proposed to remedy the situation. I have received no response. I assume they are uninterested in rectifying the problem meaning others purchasing these products could be faced with hazards similar to those I experienced.
I feel lucky that a fire did not ensue. There were burn marks on my carpet and burns penetrating my bedspread and pillow case caused by hot shards of metal. The bedspread looked like it had been hit by the exhaust of a small rocket engine with black soot covering an area of about 1.5 square feet. It had to be replaced along with the pillowcase.
Knowing what I know now I caution everyone not to use these batteries and charger until Batteryheads announces a fix for this problem. If you think this is too strong a warning then I suggest you not use them in the vicinity of any flammable surfaces, or unattended.
Below is the unanswered email I sent to Batteryheads.
To whom it may concern,
I charged one battery the day I received the order. I charged the second one just after that and it exploded with enough force to send the heaviest part of the battery about about 2' high and 3' away from the charger after ricocheting off an alarm clock. The explosion and heat also ruined a bedspread that was about 2' away, leaving a black burn mark on it and a circle of black dust about 1' in diameter. There were also smaller burn marks, apparently caused by pieces of hot copper from the battery, on the bedspread and an oriental style carpet.
Would you please tell me what remedy you would like to offer me?
Below are the details of the order for batteries and charger.
