Product Description Experience the thrill of Home Theater sound and DVD quality video in a system that won't ruin your style. The amazing DAVX1 DVD Dream System delivers multi-dimensional home theater sound with only 2 speakers and a subwoofer. Sony's unique S-FORCE front surround sound digital technology, your eyes will see a sleek, stylish system while your ears will hear a room full of sound.
Amazon.com Product Description Enjoy big, immersive surround sound from your favorite movies and music while keeping your components compact with the SONY DAV-X1 dream system, which features a multi-format, single-disc DVD player/amplifier and 2.1-channel speaker system. The S-Master digital amplifier processes audio signals from your HDTV broadcast, DVD, Super Audio-CD, or other digital source, with signal processing and amplification executed entirely in the digital domain with no analog steps--resulting in clear, accurate sound reproduction. It also includes a digital AM/FM radio tuner with 30 total presets (10 AM, 20 FM). The DVD player is compatible with DVD movie, standard CD, CD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW (and Dual Layer DVD+R), DVD-R/RW, and Video CD discs. This system also offers SACD (Super Audio Compact Disc) playback for high-resolution audio that carries a one-bit Direct Stream Digital signal, recorded at a phenomenal 2.8224 MHz sampling rate. SACD supports both stereo and multi-channel music reproduction. Sony's S-Force Pro 2.1 surround sound technology emulates a three-dimensional surround sound field by using advanced signal processing and sound wave phasing, while the omnidirectional subwoofer handles the low-frequency effects. The result is full immersive surround sound with fewer wires, and less speakers than some surround systems. The digital direct twin drive subwoofer delivers a much more powerful and uniform bass sound that exceeds most passive or active subwoofer systems. The speakers are specially designed with two unique drivers in each, which are fed by multiple discrete channels, helping to create an immediate, "out of box" surround sound experience. The DAV-X1 provides built-in Dolby Digital, DTS, and Pro Logic II surround decoding for playback through two speakers and subwoofer). Other features include A/V Sync (Lip Sync), which allows for adjustment of the audio/video parameter for perfect simultaneous playback of sound and image, and a Remote Commander control that can be programmed to handle components from other brands. It features the following audio/video connections: - Composite AV Out (RCA): 1
- S-Video In: 2
- S-Video Out: 1
- Component Video Out: 1
- HDMI Out: 1
- Optical Audio In:Ê1
- Optical Audio Out:Ê1
- Coaxial Audio Digital In:Ê3
- RCA Audio In:Ê3

HDMI output broke twice June 24, 2008 The HDMI driver or whatever was repaired once when it was covered by warranty (1yr) but broke again within a couple of months. I get all red or red and white dots now. I wouldn't recommend this or any other sony player with HDMI output. Perhaps they use the same part everywhere. The audio is great and component video works, hence the 3 star.
sony platium May 15, 2008 is as good as u can get for 2.1, beats the bose in price and quality, no problems and great sound

5/5/08: I just ordered this from WalMart (online) for $356.54 (it isn't in any of my local stores - you can check on the website). They'll even ship it to your local store for free. I'm not promoting WalMart but I think we should help each other out. Another benefit is, if you hook it up and don't like it, just repack it and bring it to your closest WalMart and get a refund. Hard to beat.
5/10/08: I was looking for a small AVR for my master bedroom. I didn't want 5.1. Normally we'll just watch TV in there, occassionally a DVD and possibly the radio. We have a full blown home theater in the family room that's used for serious audio/video.
This unit certainly hits the mark for "small". The main unit is unobtrusive and the speakers are small. The subwoofer is a bit on the big side, but aren't they all? We have it tucked away next to a dresser.
Setup was very easy. I only referred to the manual once. I have a high def. cable box connected to it and I have the X1 connected to a Panasonic Plasma TV via the HDMI cable (which isn't supplied by the way). When I powered everyting on it all worked just fine out of the box.
The DVD loaded quickly and the playback was great. The TV is 720p and the DVD I loaded was 480; the X1 did a nice job of upscaling the picture and the audio was awesome (it was StarWars 3, lots of light sabers, things blowing up).
Is it surround sound? Of course not, it only has 2 speakers and a subwoofer. While I was never fooled into thinking the sound was coming from all directions I didn't expect it to. If you're looking for the full surround sound experience, go buy a 5.1 or 7.1 system. If you're looking at the X1 and the Bose 321- give this one a serious look. It's a lot less money (I got it for 350 on WalMart's website) and it sounds great.
A note on the remote. I only used it for a few days and it was OK but not great. I use a Harmony Universal Remote so I just programmed it to handle the X1.
Unplug protect April 5, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Many Sony home theater systems appear to have problems managing the power circuits controlling the woofer. The result is that they lock down into protect mode with the display saying "Unplug Protect"
And this with the volume set at 18....
My experience with this will not allow me to buy a Sony DVD/audio system again
SUPER SYSTEM March 29, 2008 Very nice system, I think sony's dream system is as good if not better than the bose for the money.
