Surprised at the cheap components and poor performance November 22, 2009 Gaiamuse (West Tisbury, MA) I got this camera because it was the least expensive one with an external microphone jack -- great if you want to attach a microphone for better sound but generally no longer available in consumer cameras. But it wasn't until I transferred video from this camera to my computer than I discovered the problems with the camera. The picture had "stripes" running through it almost right away -- normally that's a a sign of dirty recorder or playback heads, but in this case the camera started doing this after I'd used it twice. I suspect the components are fairly cheap.
When I tried to transfer mini-dv from the camera to my computer the image kept breaking up and splitting into separate clips and dropping frames. It wasn't until I used another camera and the transfer was fine that I realized the problem was with ZR930 transfer process.
Unfortunately, I did not discover these problems until after the warranty had run out -- so I'm not thrilled. Lastly, the camera feels pretty cheaply built and so none of this should have been a surprise. I would say if you're going to spend this much go for the extra $250 and check out the Canon Vixia HV30 -- which is the other consumer camera I have access to -- it's built solidly with good components and I've been very pleased with it's performance. It also has the external mic jack.
Worked with my Mac computers November 17, 2009 E. Martinez (Philippines) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I would like to thank the other reviewer for giving a warning regarding his experience with this unit. Got this in our local electronics store here in the Philippines since it was on sale. However since I was anxious that it wont work with my Mac, I brought my powerbook G4 1.5 ghz unit to the shop complete with FW cable and my minidv tape. The sales rep was accommodating enough to let me test it with iMovie. Fortunately, it worked. So bought it and here are my initial review.
Works with my Powerbook G4 1.5Ghz, Powermac Digital Audio with upgraded 1.8 Ghz Sonnet cpu, and Macbook 2 Ghz model.
Imovie was able to identify it and I was even able to use it with my powerbook as a webcam wherein I recorded via Quiicktime pro using h.264 format.
The battery life is kind of short less than an hour with LCD on.
Picture quality is better than my old Zr40 and great handling in zoom in,zoom out, Just make sure you dont press hard on the button since it is sensitive and will zoom fast.
Low light video recording is of course still as expected for this entry level model.
Using the joystick to stop/play/reverse/forward needs getting use to but is okay.
I appreciate now the top loading minidv tape compared to the old bottom loading which removed the problem of unmounting it on a tripod in case you need to change tapes on the old zr40.
One thing I dont like (minor one) is that the FW connector port and most probably the mic in port is located inside the space where the lcd is placed when closed. When I am transferring video without the power adapter connected, I cant close the LCD to save battery. This is most likely what will happen also If I connect an external mic. (have not tested this)
And the last one I wished it had was the ability to take still pictures.
Overall, I like this camera for ease of use and its quick start button that help save battery life and less time to start it. Video quality is good but need to try the suggestions on how to improve it as suggested in [...] forums.
Things you might need to buy.
FW connector (for those who use USB - this has NO USB port only FW)
Shoulder strap to hang it around your shoulder during breaks. Since the hand strap wont be enough for long video recording.
Extra battery
So for those Mac users, try to check your unit if it works with your Mac. Not sure why it did not work with the other reviewer but just to be safe, check out the unit first before buying or if the store has a return policy.
Fantastic! October 27, 2009 Erika Ashmoon (Peculiar, MO USA) No problems at all. Shipping was incredibly fast. Even got a personal note from the company. Camera works great. Using Windows XP. Absolutely no problems. Great microphone. Sound quality is excellent.
Canon ZR930 June 29, 2009 Bill Williamson Purchased for external mic input and high resolution for such an inexpensive unit.
Works great, although previous reviews were correct. The internal mic does pick up
a lot of noise from the drive mechanism.
I will use the external mic(lapel unit) most of the time as i am taping my car(s) on various road courses.
The sound is great and the resolution and anti shake seem to work fine......
Very good service from amazon and dealer
amazon's description is incorrect April 14, 2009 Stan Cardwell (Lexington Park, MD United States) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
this is not a gripe with the product or the seller but with amazon which stated in description "also compatible with SD cards" which unfortunately is not true. i ordered this product thinking it had all the features of the 950 plus an external mike jack but this unit is missing a still capture feature that I desired since I'll be traveling and only want to carry one camera. so this is going back. one other reviewer mentioned the lack of SD card (which I only now discovered). so if you want a camcorder to take stills onto SD, look elsewhere. If you want an external mike and a greater zoom, then this wins out over the ZR950.
